Shinjuku Midrange Hotels: 3 and 4 Star Options Compared

Shinjuku is where most searches for Tokyo accommodation start. With midrange hotels, there are many options to choose from. For example, a 3-star hotel in Kabukicho can mean a 12 sq m (130 sq ft) double with a unit bathroom, or a boutique property with in-room jacuzzis and rooms designed around a specific theme.

We have been visiting Shinjuku regularly since 2015 and have stayed in four hotels across the area. Our time spent in Shinjuku and our experience staying at nearly 40 Tokyo hotels, means we have a clear picture of how each part of Shinjuku feels to stay in both by day and night and what the accommodation options are like.

Midrange travellers in Shinjuku tend to be couples, solo travellers, and small groups who want a room that earns its rate: somewhere well-located and a decent size by Tokyo standards, without chasing loyalty points or club lounge access.

Fourteen properties are covered here across four zones: Kabukicho, Southwest Shinjuku, West Shinjuku, and Southeast Shinjuku. Budget hotels, capsule hotels, apartment hotels, and premium options are each covered in separate articles. For the full picture across all budgets and types, see our Where to Stay in Shinjuku guide.

Shinjuku Midrange Hotels – At a Glance

Shinjuku’s midrange hotels vary widely in character and zone. Choosing the right one comes down to what you want your stay to feel like, how much room you need, and which extras matter. These are our top picks. The full guide below covers all 14 properties with room sizes, walk times, and what each one gets right and wrong.

  • JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom Shinjuku: Our personal pick among the 14 properties in this guide. Rooms are spacious by Tokyo standards, the South Exit is three minutes away, and the airport bus terminal is directly across the road. Click here to check out and book.
  • Hotel Kabuki: The most distinctive midrange hotel in Kabukicho. Every room has an in-room jacuzzi, and the boutique scale and private sauna option put it in a different category from the rest of this guide. Click here to check out and book.
  • Daiwa Roynet Hotel Nishi-Shinjuku Premier: The strongest pick in West Shinjuku. Rooms are larger than most competitors at this price, and the Junior Suite at 49 sq m (525 sq ft) is among the most spacious midrange options in Shinjuku. Click here to check out and book.
  • Bespoke Hotel Shinjuku: Breakfast and an evening happy hour are included in the rate, Golden Gai is two minutes away, and the rooms are soundproofed. The most complete package among the Kabukicho hotels in this guide. Click here to check out and book.
  • Tokyu Stay Shinjuku Eastside: The only midrange hotel in this guide with an in-room washing machine and dryer. The larger room types make it the pick for longer Kabukicho stays. Click here to check out and book.
  • Hotel Gracery Shinjuku: The Godzilla hotel. The rooftop head, film-poster corridor, and themed floor make the stay about more than the room. The pick for travellers who want their hotel to be part of the trip. Click here to check out and book.

How Shinjuku Midrange Hotels Compare to Other Tokyo Areas

Shinjuku is one of the most expensive places to stay in Tokyo. The three most relevant alternatives for travellers looking at midrange accommodation are:

Asakusa. Traditional streets close to Senso-ji, the Sumida River, and Tokyo Skytree. An excellent range of midrange hotels at lower average prices than Shinjuku. Good for first-time visitors drawn to a slower, more traditional neighbourhood. Trade-off: longer train rides to west-side destinations and nightlife.

Ueno / Okachimachi. Strong transport links, a large number of midrange hotels, and close access to Ueno Park, the zoo, and several large museums. Comparable midrange options at lower average rates than Shinjuku. Trade-off: less street character than Asakusa at ground level.

Akihabara. A surprising number of midrange hotels with direct access to the Yamanote Line and pop-culture streets. Good for electronics and anime-focused trips. Trade-off: fewer dining options and less variety than Shinjuku or Asakusa.

If Shinjuku matches your vibe and the transport connections match your itinerary, particularly for day trips to Hakone, Kawaguchiko, or Nikko, it’s a sensible place to stay. For space and value alone, Asakusa and Ueno offer more for the same money.

What to Expect from Midrange Hotels in Shinjuku

Entry-level rooms at several midrange properties in this guide sit at 18โ€“21 sq m (195โ€“225 sq ft), which is the standard starting point for this price bracket in central Tokyo. What midrange hotels consistently offer over budget hotels is a wider bed (typically 154โ€“168cm rather than 110โ€“140cm), a bathroom with the bath and toilet in separate areas, better build quality, and more reliable service.

The room sizes that make a stay more comfortable are around 22-32 sq m (235โ€“345 sq ft). In that range (covering rooms like JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom’s twins, La’Gent’s Comfort Twin and above, and Daiwa Roynet’s standard rooms), two people can both unpack a large suitcase without having to negotiate floor space. At 38โ€“49 sq m (410โ€“525 sq ft), rooms like the JR Kyushu Premium Twin and Daiwa Roynet’s Junior Suite feel spacious by any standard.

The area of your hotel in Shinjuku affects sleep as much as the room size. Kabukicho hotels can be subject to street noise well past midnight. Southwest and West Shinjuku are quieter from around 10 pm. Neither is a wrong choice, but they suit different priorities.

Where the Shinjuku Midrange Hotels Are

The 14 properties in this guide are spread across four areas. Each has a distinct character that shapes the stay as much as the hotel itself.

Kabukicho has eight of the properties in this guide. It is Shinjuku’s entertainment district: neon, Golden Gai’s narrow bar alleys, late-night ramen, and streets that stay busy at any hour. After dark, the blocks near Okubo Park shift toward adult entertainment. Kabukicho suits solo travellers and couples who want to be in the thick of the action. Unless the hotel has good insulation or your room is higher up, it is not for light sleepers.

South West Shinjuku is the closest area to JR Shinjuku Station’s South Exit and the Bus Terminal at Shinjuku (the highway and the airport bus terminal). Quieter than Kabukicho after business hours, it suits travellers who want practical connections over neighbourhood atmosphere. Airport limousine buses stop at the door of two properties here.

West Shinjuku is the skyscraper district on the far side of the station. Streets are quite empty after business hours, and there is little street-level atmosphere. Tochomae Station on the Toei Oedo Line is walkable from both properties, connecting directly to Roppongi, Tsukiji, Ueno, and Ryogoku without going through the main Shinjuku interchange.

South East Shinjuku. One property sits here, close to Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden and Shinjuku-Sanchome Station. It’s the quietest area in this guide.

Check out our detailed map below showing the locations of each area.

Midrange Hotels in Kabukicho

Kabukicho has more midrange properties in this guide than the other three zones combined. It’s Tokyo’s most well-known nightlife area, so the streets are busy and loud well past midnight. The hotels within it vary considerably in character, from large-scale business hotels to boutique properties with design-led rooms. Being in Kabukicho puts Golden Gai, the Godzilla head, late-night food, and the East Exit within walking distance.

See our detailed map below to see where our recommended mid-range Kabukicho hotels are located.

Hotel Kabuki (3 Star)

Hotel Kabuki opened in April 2023 and falls into a category most travellers write off too quickly: it is a love hotel, but one that visitors rate very highly (the equal highest rated hotel in this guide) for reasons including cleanliness, soundproofing, and well-executed themed interiors. The designs are wild.

Every room has a private bathtub/jacuzzi, which is unusual for a midrange property anywhere in Shinjuku.

  • Standard room: 21 sq m (225 sq ft) / 2 people/queen bed
  • Jnr Suite: 32 sq m (345 sq ft) / 2 people
  • Deluxe King room is 34 sq m (365 sq ft), and King Suite is 52 sq m (560 sq ft)
  • Higher-level rooms (such as the Suite, Jr Suite, Luxury, and Deluxe Rooms) have features like private saunas and a karaoke machine.
  • You can book it for multiple days, but since it’s a love hotel, you can also book rooms for 2 or 3 hours.
  • No breakfast ยท Coin laundry ยท 48 rooms

Walk: About 5 min from JR Shinjuku Station (East Exit).

Bespoke Hotel Shinjuku by Nest (3 Star)

Bespoke is the most design-led midrange hotel in Kabukicho. A video installation plays at the entrance, the graphic identity runs through every room, and no two rooms are the same. The ground-floor cafe moves from craft coffee and omusubi in the morning to Kabukicho-curated craft beer in the evening. Free breakfast and a free nightly happy hour are included in the rate, and Golden Gai is two minutes away.

  • Doubles: 19 sq m (205 sq ft) / 2 people
  • Twins: 19โ€“24 sq m (205โ€“260 sq ft) / 2 people
  • Triple: 24 sq m (260 sq ft) / 3 people
  • King Bed: 33 sq m (355 sq ft) / 1 room only / king bed + raised tatami relaxation area
  • Free breakfast ยท Free nightly happy hour ยท Soundproofed rooms ยท Coin laundry ยท 106 rooms

Walk: About 3 min from Higashi-Shinjuku Station (Toei Oedo Line and Fukutoshin Line), or 12 min from JR Shinjuku Station (East Exit).

Tokyu Stay Shinjuku Eastside (3 Star)

Tokyu Stay Eastside is the only midrange hotel in this guide that has an in-room washing machine and dryer in every room. For longer stays, this feature removes laundry as a daily problem. I would recommend the residential rooms over the comfort rooms for the bit of extra space and the cooktop. The Terrace Room and Garden Suite are among the most distinctive midrange options in Kabukicho, but their rates are well above the Comfort tier.

  • Comfort Double and Twin: 18โ€“23 sq m (195โ€“250 sq ft) / 2 people / in-room washer/dryer (no cooktop)
  • Residential Double and Twin: 20โ€“25 sq m (215โ€“270 sq ft) / 2 people / in-room washer/dryer + cooktop
  • Terrace Room: 26 sq m (280 sq ft) / 180cm bed / private terrace + cooktop
  • Superior Twin: 32 sq m (345 sq ft) / up to 3 people ยท Deluxe Twin: 41 sq m (440 sq ft) / up to 3 people
  • Adjoining Room A: 43 sq m (465 sq ft) combined / 4 people / two connected rooms, not one open space ยท Universal Room: 26 sq m (280 sq ft) / accessible layout
  • Garden Suite: 69 sq m (745 sq ft) / up to 3 people / private terrace

Walk: About 3 min from Higashi-Shinjuku Station (Toei Oedo Line), 8โ€“10 min from Shinjuku-Sanchome Station, and about 12 minutes from Shinjuku Station.

La’Gent Hotel Shinjuku Kabukicho (3 Star)

La’Gent sits in northern Kabukicho, close to Shin-Okubo’s Korean food street, a great dining option away from the main Kabukicho entertainment areas. The hotel is directly beside Okubo Park, which has a known street prostitution presence after dark. Themed rooms start with manga and bonsai designs at the lower room types and move up to ukiyo-e prints at the top.

  • Doubles and queens: 12โ€“12.5 sq m (130โ€“135 sq ft) / 2 people/unit bathroom
  • Moderate Twin: 15 sq m (160 sq ft) / 2 people / unit bathroom ยท Comfort Twin: 20 sq m (215 sq ft) / 3 people / separate bathroom
  • Superior Twin: 22.3 sq m (240 sq ft) / 2 people ยท Deluxe Twin: 27 sq m (290 sq ft) / up to 4 people / separate bathroom
  • Luxury Twin: 36 sq m (390 sq ft) / 2 people / 140cmร—2 / separate bathroom
  • Breakfast available ยท Sports bar on ground floor ยท Coin laundry

Hotel Villa Fontaine Tokyo Shinjuku (3 Star)

Villa Fontaine’s Kabuku concept rooms come in four design themes: Bloom, Primal, Geometry, and Neo. Kabuku in Japanese means “to lean.” The standard double at 13 sq m (140 sq ft) is compact; upgrading to a Kabuku room adds floor space and a 160cm bed.

It’s one of only two properties in this guide with an in-room sauna, the other being Hotel Kabuki. As it’s in the northern part of Kabukicho, the hotel sits closer to Higashi-Shinjuku Station than to JR Shinjuku Station. It’s one block away from Okuba Park (see La’gent Hotel).

  • Standard Double: 13 sq m (140 sq ft) / 2 people / 140cm bed
  • Kabuku and Superior Queen and Twin: 18 sq m (195 sq ft) / 2 people / 160cm bed (queen) or 100cmร—2 (twin)
  • Sauna Room: 31 sq m (335 sq ft) / up to 3 people / private in-room sauna
  • Doutor Coffee breakfast partnership on site ยท Airport luggage delivery service ยท Coin laundry

Hotel Amanek Shinjuku Kabukicho (3 Star)

Hotel Amanek’s rooms are Japanese-styled with natural wood finishes and high-quality Simmons mattresses throughout. Every room type has a separate bath and toilet room, which is not standard for all hotels at this price in Kabukicho. The Japanese King room adds a tatami area alongside the 180cm (6 ft) wide bed. Breakfast is available in the B1F lounge at an extra cost.

  • Entry rooms: approximately 12โ€“15 sq m (130โ€“160 sq ft)
  • Corner Triple: available for 3 people
  • European cuisine restaurant ยท Buffet breakfast available ยท Cafรฉ ยท Hair salon ยท Coin laundry ยท 169 rooms

Shinjuku Prince Hotel (4 Star)

Shinjuku Prince Hotel sits in the middle of Kabukicho, with JR Shinjuku Station’s East Exit about five minutes away on foot. The top-floor restaurant and bar has a panoramic view across both Kabukicho and the West Shinjuku skyline. The Standard Rooms are compact.

  • Standard Double and Twin: 15.3 sq m (165 sq ft) / 2 people / 140cm bed (double) or 97cmร—2 (twin)
  • Superior, Deluxe King, Deluxe Twin and Deluxe Triple: 30.6 sq m (330 sq ft) / 2โ€“3 people / upper floors
  • Suite: 61.2 sq m (660 sq ft) / 2 people / 24F

Hotel Gracery Shinjuku (4 Star)

Hotel Gracery is themed around a pop culture icon. The lobby has a Godzilla poster gallery and merchandise corner; the Godzilla Floor on the 30th floor has a film photo corridor, 36 dedicated rooms, and two themed concept rooms. Six Godzilla View Rooms look directly at the giant head on the 8th-floor terrace. For travellers who care about Godzilla, it’s worth it to stay there for that alone.

  • Standard Double: 18 sq m (195 sq ft) / 1โ€“2 people / 140cm bed ยท Comfort Double: 20 sq m (215 sq ft) / 160cm bed
  • Standard Twin: 24 sq m (260 sq ft) / 2 people / 120cmร—2 ยท Comfort Twin: 32 sq m (345 sq ft) / 2 people
  • Triple: 28 sq m (300 sq ft) / 3 people / 110cmร—3

Midrange Hotels in South West Shinjuku

South West Shinjuku is the most practical zone in this guide. JR Shinjuku Station’s South Exit is close, and Busta Shinjuku (the highway and airport bus terminal) is steps from two of the three properties. The streets are quieter than Kabukicho after business hours. All three properties have easy access to airport limousine buses (and they stop directly at Odakyu Hotel Century and Hotel Sunroute Plaza).

See our detailed map below to learn where the South West Shinjuku mid-range hotels are located.

JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom Shinjuku (4 Star)

We have personally stayed at JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom in a twin room measuring 25 sq m (270 sq ft), with two full-size twin beds, a sofa and table, and a bathroom with a separate wet room and a deep tub. It’s modern and clean, and overall, we had a fantastic experience. The three-minute walk to the South Exit becomes second nature within a day. You can check out our detailed review of JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom Shinjuku here.

  • Moderate Double: 18 sq m (195 sq ft) / 2 people / 140cm bed

Odakyu Hotel Century Southern Tower (4 Star)

The hotel will close for a full renovation in October 2026 for an estimated 18โ€“24 months. It is bookable for stays before that date.

Odakyu Hotel Century Southern Tower has the most direct station access of any hotel in this zone. The Southern Terrace walkway connects the building to Shinjuku Station’s south side, putting JR, Odakyu, and Keio lines a short walk away. The airport limousine bus stops at the entrance. Room views face either Shinjuku Gyoen to the east or Yoyogi Park and the West Shinjuku skyline, with the upper floors giving clear views in both directions.

  • Single: 19 sq m (205 sq ft) / 1 person / 120cm bed
  • Doubles: 19โ€“34 sq m (205โ€“365 sq ft) / 1โ€“2 people / 150โ€“180cm bed; Scenic King (26 sq m) and Panoramic King (31 sq m) are the picks for couples

Hotel Sunroute Plaza is a large hotel with over 600 rooms and has airport limousine buses to both Haneda and Narita, which stop at the entrance. All rooms have Simmons mattresses. Midrange Hotels in West Shinjuku

West Shinjuku’s two midrange properties are the quietest bases in this guide. The skyscraper district empties after business hours. Tochomae Station on the Toei Oedo Line is a short walk from both, connecting directly to Roppongi, Tsukiji, Ueno, and Ryogoku without going through the main Shinjuku interchange. The trade-off in this zone is the 10โ€“15 minute walk to JR Shinjuku Station.

See our map below to learn where our midrange West Shinjuku hotels are located.

The Knot Tokyo Shinjuku (3 Star)

The Knot is the only hotel in this guide with a park directly opposite. Shinjuku Central Park sits across the road, and the ground-floor bakery with outdoor tables is a good option for a morning coffee before heading out. Standard rooms at 14 sq m (150 sq ft) are one of the smallest in this guide.

  • Standard Double and Twin: 14 sq m (150 sq ft) / 2 people / 140cm bed (double) or 90cmร—2 (twin)

Midrange Hotels in South East Shinjuku

One property sits in this part of Shinjuku. The streets around Shinjuku-Sanchome are quieter than Kabukicho and the station area, and Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden is close by. The Marunouchi and Fukutoshin Lines at Shinjuku-Sanchome Station connect across central Tokyo without going through the main Shinjuku Station.

See our map below to learn where the mid-range hotels are located in South East Shinjuku.

Final Thoughts

The first choice to make once you’ve decided to stay in Shinjuku is not which hotel, but which part of Shinjuku. Get the area right, and most of the hotels in that zone will work well for you.

In Southwest Shinjuku, JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom Shinjuku is our personal pick and the hotel we stayed at. Hotel Sunroute and the Century Southern Tower are both strong options in this zone. If the Century’s direct station connection matters for your trip, book before October 2026.

In Kabukicho, Hotel Kabuki is the pick for couples who want an in-room jacuzzi. Bespoke suits those who want Golden Gai close and a quieter room. Hotel Gracery is the pick if the Godzilla experience is part of the trip. Tokyu Stay Eastside is the pick for longer stays where laundry matters.

In West Shinjuku, Daiwa Roynet Nishi-Shinjuku Premier is the stronger of the two options, with larger rooms overall and an additional Marunouchi Line connection at Nishi-Shinjuku Station. The Knot suits travellers who want easy access to the park and a good bakery to start the day.

In the South East Shinjuku zone, Tokyu Stay Shinjuku reopens in October 2026.
