10 Essential Universal Studios Japan Tips for First-Timers

On our first trip to Universal Studios Japan, we thought we had everything organised. Tickets were booked, our must-ride list was ready, and we were excited for a full day in the park.

Two days before our visit, we discovered something called an Express Pass. By then, every single one was already sold out. To make things worse, it was Halloween season and the park was packed. The result was spending a lot of time in queues, with only four rides all day.

We left feeling frustrated, knowing we had missed out on so much simply because we had not understood how the system worked.

When we went back for our second visit, we did things differently. We booked our Express Passes well in advance and planned our day around them. This time we rode all the major attractions with minimal waiting, had time to enjoy shows and food, and still managed some relaxed shopping.

This guide shares the ten essential tips we learned so you can avoid rookie mistakes and get the most out of your USJ visit.

Tip 1 – Plan Your USJ Visit Date Before Finalising Your Japan Trip Itinerary

The day you choose to visit Universal Studios Japan can make or break your experience. If you lock in hotels and train tickets before deciding on your USJ day, you might end up stuck with a peak crowd date. Instead, pick your USJ date first while your itinerary is still flexible.

Check a reliable USJ crowd calendar (you can use Google Translate) to find quieter days. Avoid Japanese public holidays, vacation periods such as Golden Week, and weekends. Mondays are usually the busiest weekday, while Tuesdays to Fridays tend to be calmer.

Also, check if any rides or shows are planned to be closed during your visit, to avoid disappointment.

Also, note that park re-entry is not available, so plan your day for a single entry and exit.

By picking the right date before you book the rest of your trip, you give yourself the best chance of a smooth and enjoyable day.

Also, consider whether to stay near the entrance to USJ and add this to your itinerary. Staying right beside the park enables you to make the most of your day. There are quite a few hotel, food and souvenir options in the pedestrian street between Universal City Station and the entrance to USJ.

We chose this option for our second USJ visit and it made a real difference to us having a great day out, knowing that when we were finished that we could do a short walk back to our hotel and then just chill.

We have put together a full guide on where to stay near Universal Studios Japan with options for every budget and travel style so you can make the most of your own visit!

Tip 2 – Buy Your USJ Tickets and Express Passes Well in Advance

About Universal Studios Japan Entry Passes

Your entry ticket to Universal Studios Japan is called a Studio Pass. These passes use tiered pricing, with higher prices on peak days and lower prices on quieter days, so the date you choose can affect how much you pay.

You can buy a one-day, one and a half-day, or two-day Studio Pass. Buying online through a trusted travel agency like Klook is quick and avoids the payment issues many visitors experience with the official site.

About USJ Express Passes

An Express Pass is an optional add-on that can transform your day! It allows you to skip the regular queue for a set number of rides and usually includes timed entry to Super Nintendo World.

The most common options are the Express Pass 4, which covers four rides, and the Express Pass 7, which covers seven rides, but there are also special event passes for seasonal celebrations like Halloween, Christmas, and Cool Japan.

Express Passes are released around two months before the date of visit and can sell out quickly, especially during busy periods, so book as early as possible to avoid missing out! After adding the pass to your shopping cart on Klook, the next step is to select your preferred time slots. Another reason to purchase your passes as soon as they are released is that the most popular timeslot options sell out the fastest!

From our own experience, visiting without an Express Pass on a busy day meant riding only four attractions. By booking our passes in advance for a later trip, we were able to ride all the major attractions with minimal waits and still had plenty of time for shows, food, and shopping.

What if You Can’t Afford an Express Pass?

If an Express Pass is not in your budget, you can still enjoy a great day with smart planning. Arrive well before park opening, check the USJ app to spot shorter queues, and start with the most in-demand attractions early in the day.

Make full use of the Single Rider lines, which can cut your wait significantly, though you will be seated separately from your group. Current Single Rider attractions are:

  • Mine Cart Madness, Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem, Elmo’s Go-Go Skateboard, Hollywood Dream – The Ride, Space Fantasy – The Ride, The Flying Dinosaur, Jurassic Park – The Ride and JAWS

Even without an Express Pass, combining an early start, strategic ride order, and Single Rider queues can help you fit in a surprising number of attractions while keeping stress to a minimum.

Tip 3 – Arrive Early

One of the easiest ways to get more out of your day at Universal Studios Japan is to arrive well before the park opens. Gates often open earlier than the posted time, so being at the entrance 30 to 60 minutes beforehand can give you a valuable head start.

An early arrival lets you head straight for your top priority attractions before the queues build. Even without an Express Pass, you can often ride one or two major attractions in the first hour with minimal wait times.

We used this strategy on our first visit after missing out on Express Passes. We arrived one hour before the scheduled opening and were surprised to find the gates already open and many rides operating. We dashed straight to Harry Potter World and got onto Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey with only a 20-minute wait, then went straight onto Flight of the Hippogriff with a wait of around 30 minutes. By the time we got off the second ride, the wait time for Forbidden Journey had blown out to four hours.

If you do not have an Express Pass or Studio Pass that includes timed entry to Super Nintendo World, you will need to secure a free timed entry ticket through the official USJ app or at designated in-park kiosks. These tickets can run out quickly on busy days, so arriving early greatly increases your chances of getting a time slot that works well with the rest of your ride plan.

Tip 4 – Know the USJ Park Layout and Lands

Universal Studios Japan is divided into multiple themed lands, each with its own rides, entertainment, food, and shops. Knowing where everything is before you arrive will help you move through the park efficiently and avoid unnecessary backtracking.

If you are buying an Express Pass, you will need to choose your ride times for certain attractions when you book. This is where understanding the park layout really matters, as you do not want to rush from one end of the park to the other multiple times in a day. Group your Express Pass rides so you can do other attractions, shows, or meal stops nearby in the same time window.

Some of the key lands to know include:

  • Super Nintendo World – Mario Kart: Koopas Challenge, Yoshi’s Adventure, Donkey Kong Country Mine Cart Madness, interactive gameplay with a Power Up Band, themed snacks, and exclusive merchandise. Allow extra time here to explore the immersive areas, hunt for hidden details, and take photos.
  • The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, Flight of the Hippogriff, shops like Ollivanders and Honeydukes, and Butterbeer. Plan time to wander Hogsmeade, explore the castle walkthrough, and enjoy the live performances.
  • Minion Park – Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem, kid-friendly attractions, and themed snacks.
  • Jurassic Park – The Flying Dinosaur, Jurassic Park The Ride.
  • New York – The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, shows, and dining.
  • Hollywood – Hollywood Dream The Ride, Space Fantasy The Ride, shops, and entertainment.
  • San Francisco – Fast and Furious theming, restaurants, and photo spots.
  • Amity Village – JAWS.
  • WaterWorld – Home to the WaterWorld stunt show.
  • Universal Wonderland – Elmos Go Go Skateboard, Snoopy and Hello Kitty attractions for younger kids.

Spending a few minutes studying the park map before your visit and even more when selecting Express Pass times can save you a lot of time and energy on the day, while also making sure you leave enough time to soak in the details of the most immersive areas.

Tip 5 – Learn How to Use the USJ App Before You Visit

The official USJ app is an essential tool for making the most of your day. You can check real-time wait times, find attractions on the park map, and make free same-day reservations for certain rides, restaurants, stores, and photo services. Unfortunately, there are no options to pre-reserve any other ride timeslot apart from purchasing an Express Pass.

The app also allows you to get a free timed entry ticket for Super Nintendo World if your Studio Pass or Express Pass does not already include one. These are limited and can disappear quickly, so securing one early in the day is important.

Before your visit, you can download the app, create an account, and register the Studio Passes or Annual Passes for your group by scanning or uploading the QR codes. Doing this ahead of time makes entry smoother and allows you to start booking as soon as you are inside the park.

Timed entry eTickets and Yoyakunori reservations can only be made once your Studio Pass has been scanned at the entry gate.

Yoyakunori Reserve & Ride

For those with young families, one of the most useful features is the “Yoyakunori” (Reserve & Ride) system, which lets you book a specific ride time for selected Universal Wonderland attractions. Instead of queuing, you can shop, eat, or enjoy other areas until your time slot.

If you have trouble with the app or it cannot read your QR code, you can also make reservations at kiosks located at each participating attraction. Current Yoyakunori Reserve & Ride attractions in Universal Wonderland are:

  • Snoopys Flying Ace Adventure
  • The Flying Snoopy
  • Elmos Go Go Skateboard
  • Moppys Balloon Trip
  • Elmos Bubble Bubble
Elmo's Go Go Skateboard

Tip 6 – Enjoy the Shows and Entertainment

Universal Studios Japan is not just about rides. The park also offers a packed schedule of shows, street performances, and seasonal events that add a lot to the overall experience. From the high-energy WaterWorld stunt spectacular to character greetings and pop-up performances, there is always something happening around the park.

One of the highlights is the daily large-scale parade, which usually winds its way through Hollywood, New York, San Francisco, past WaterWorld, and towards Minion Park. Parade themes, times and routes can vary depending on the season, so check the USJ app or the daily entertainment schedule at the park entrance. Arriving 20 to 30 minutes early will give you a better chance of getting a good viewing spot without losing too much ride time.

Other entertainment options to look out for include the Sing On Tour show, Universal Monsters Live Rock and Roll Show, and special seasonal events such as Halloween Horror Nights or the Universal Crystal Christmas celebrations. Many of these are included with park admission, making them an easy way to take a break from the rides while still enjoying something memorable.

Here is a quick overview of the main entertainment options in each area:

  • The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Meet the Hogsmeade Magical Creatures, Hippogriff Magical Lesson, Frog Choir, Triwizard Spirit Rally, and Wand Studies.
  • Jurassic Park / Jurassic World – Jurassic World Raptor Alert, Jurassic World Dino Encounter, and Jurassic World Baby Dino Adventure.
  • Universal Wonderland – Universal Wonderland: Let’s Rock Together! and Moppy’s Lucky Dance Party.
  • Minion Park – Minions Greeting: Ready to Rock! and Minions Villain-Con Greeting.
  • Hollywood / New York – Power of Rock, Melting Pot, Wicked: The Witches of Oz, and Universal Monsters Live: Rock and Roll Show.
  • WaterWorld – WaterWorld Stunt Show.

Seasonal events can completely transform the park, from the NO LIMIT! Summer Splash Parade and NO LIMIT! Summer Dance Nights with HYBE JAPAN, to the spooky Halloween Horror Nights in autumn, and the magical Universal Crystal Christmas celebrations in winter. Limited time shows like the One Piece Premier Show are also popular highlights.

These events often feature exclusive entertainment, themed food, and unique photo opportunities, making them worth planning your trip around. You can find out information about upcoming major events at USJ here.

Tip 7 – Plan Your Meals Wisely

Food is a big part of the fun at Universal Studios Japan, but queues for popular restaurants can get long, especially at peak meal times. If you have your heart set on eating in Super Nintendo World or The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, plan ahead so you don’t waste time in line.

The USJ app allows you to make advance reservations for select restaurants once you are inside the park, so it is worth checking early in the day. If reservations are not available, consider eating earlier or later than the lunch and dinner rush to get faster service.

You can also find a variety of snack carts and quick service stands throughout the park selling themed treats like Minion popcorn buckets, turkey legs, Butterbeer, and Super Mushroom drinks. These are perfect if you want to grab something on the go and keep exploring without a long break.

Tip 8 – Make Time for Shopping

Universal Studios Japan is packed with unique merchandise you will not find anywhere else, from exclusive Harry Potter wands and robes to Mario-themed Power Up Bands, Minion plushies, and seasonal collectibles. Popular items can sell out quickly, especially during special events like Halloween and Christmas, so if you see something you really want, buy it when you spot it.

Some of the best themed shopping areas are inside the lands themselves, such as Wiseacre’s Wizarding Equipment and Honeydukes in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, 1-Up Factory in Super Nintendo World, and Super Star Plaza for Mario-themed souvenirs. You will also find large general stores near the entrance and exit where you can pick up a wide variety of merchandise before leaving the park.

If you plan to do a lot of shopping, consider using USJ’s lockers so you do not have to carry bulky bags around all day.

Tax-free shopping is available for foreign visitors staying in Japan for less than six months. You must present your valid passport and meet the minimum purchase amount of 5,000 yen (before tax). Refunds are processed at Studio Gifts West from 2:00 p.m., and a 3.3% handling fee applies. Some items, such as food, popcorn buckets, tickets, and photo services, are not eligible. The tax-free service ends when the park closes, but lines can get long after 4:00 p.m., so plan to visit the counter earlier in the afternoon.

Tip 9 – Stay for the Nighttime Atmosphere

Universal Studios Japan transforms after dark, with the park’s lands and attractions taking on a completely different feel under the evening lights. Harry Potter World becomes even more magical with its softly lit streets, Super Nintendo World glows with vibrant neon, and rides like Hollywood Dream – The Ride offer a spectacular nighttime city view.

Even if you have already experienced certain rides during the day, it is worth riding them again at night for a fresh perspective. The park often hosts nighttime parades, seasonal light shows, or projection mapping events on park buildings during special times of the year.

If your schedule allows, plan to stay until closing time to make the most of the park’s atmosphere and entertainment after dark. This is also a great time to enjoy popular attractions with potentially shorter wait times as day guests begin to leave.

Tip 10 – Strategies for Families with Young Kids

Visiting Universal Studios Japan with little ones can be just as magical as it is for thrill seekers. You just need to plan your day around their needs and the attractions they can enjoy. Universal Wonderland is the main hub for young children, with gentle rides, interactive play areas, and character meet and greets featuring Elmo, Snoopy, and Hello Kitty.

Make the most of the Child Switch service available on over 20 rides, which allows one adult to ride while the other stays in a waiting area with the child, then switch without requeuing. For older kids who meet the height requirements and do not mind riding alone, Single Rider lines can save a lot of time.

Bring or rent a stroller if needed, as the park is large and little legs tire quickly. Stroller rental is available near the entrance. Also, plan regular breaks for snacks, shade, and rest, and check the USJ app for show and parade times that appeal to younger audiences.

Families can also take advantage of dedicated family service facilities across the park. These include baby food for sale, diaper change stations, and nursing rooms with hot water and microwaves (available at Guest Services, in Universal Wonderland, and in the San Francisco area). There is also a stroller rental service for children aged up to 48 months.

Conclusion

Universal Studios Japan is one of those places that will stick in your memory long after your trip, but as we learned on our first visit, how you plan can make all the difference. That first time, we only managed four rides because we left it too late to buy Express Passes and did not think about crowd levels until it was too late. We were also staying in Kyoto with three young kids, which meant a huge and exhausting day out.

On our second visit, we booked early, planned our day properly, and rode every major attraction with minimal waits. This time we stayed right outside the USJ gates, and it made for such a relaxing start to the day. The difference was night and day.

If there is one takeaway from our experience, it is this. Some preparation now means far more fun later. Pick your date wisely, lock in your Studio Passes and Express Passes early, and use the tools available to make the most of your day. That way, you will spend your time making magical memories instead of standing in endless queues.
